HYDROGEN FUEL CELL CAR

The customer required the design of a hydrogen fuel cell 4×4 racing car. This car should have a range of 900km without any hydrogen recharge. The Quionne team designs a vehicle consisting of two fuel cell of 30kW power each one. These fuel cells were feed with hydrogen by four large high pressure carbon fiber type II vessels, with the capacity of store 20kg of hydrogen at 350 bars. The fuel cells produce electricity continuously feeding a lithium battery pack of 40 kWh. This battery pack feed a permanent magnet electric motor that was capable of a peak power of 200kW. A fast hydrogen recharge system for the pressure vessels was designed as well.

The whole system was designed and equipment vendors contacted to compare the cost and technical feasibility of it, being the result positive and the car design viable for the race. However, given the prohibition of high pressure vessels in the motorsports race regulations the car cannot participate so the car was not built, being the design done awaiting funding for another event or some change on the regulations.
